Every year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) captures global attention — stadiums packed, viewership soaring, and billions flowing through ads and media rights. It’s one of the most profitable sporting ecosystems in the world.
But here’s a thought: What if a portion of IPL’s massive revenues were taxed and redirected to fund research and innovation in India?
In IPL 2023 alone, BCCI recorded a surplus of ₹5,120 crore, with total revenues of ₹11,770 crore. Future seasons are expected to rake in ₹12,000–₹13,500 crore annually. And yet, BCCI enjoys income tax exemptions under charitable status, and franchises benefit from favorable tax treatment. Player salaries are taxed — but large chunks of ecosystem profits remain lightly taxed or untaxed.

Leading a young, multicultural cricket team this season reinforced a simple truth: entrepreneurship is ultimately about building teams under pressure. Individual talent may win matches, but sustained success comes from culture, trust, and shared purpose.
Working with players from diverse backgrounds showed how differences in mindset and communication, when aligned, can become a powerful competitive advantage—much like in business. It also demanded a shift in leadership style, reminding me that what worked yesterday doesn’t work today, especially with a new generation. Skills can be trained, but mindset, belief, and resilience must be built deliberately.
The focus was never just on winning, but on developing capability and accountability—because results follow strong systems. Most importantly, it reinforced that a leader cannot play every ball.
